How Dental Implants Work

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of metals like titanium. Once placed in the jawbone, they fuse with the bone, creating a sturdy foundation for prosthetic teeth. Dental implants can support individual crowns, bridges, a full arch of teeth, and even dentures. Replacement teeth look and feel natural, making it possible to speak, eat, and smile without worries.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Generally, dental implants are an option if you:

  • Have healthy enough gums and bone to support one or more implants
  • Are committed to maintaining good oral hygiene practices
  • Do not have conditions that could impact the healing process, such as diabetes and certain autoimmune disorders
  • Are a non-smoker or willing to quit smoking

It is important to note that problems with jawbone density and gum volume can be remedied through bone and gum grafting. To get more information about your candidacy for dental implants, consult one of our specialists.

The Dental Implant Process

The first step to getting dental implants at Toluca Dental Studio is a consultation to evaluate your oral health and determine if any procedures are necessary to prepare (grafting, tooth extraction, and more). If the implant procedure could benefit you, our team will create a tailored treatment plan to restore one or more missing teeth.

Placing the dental implant involves surgically inserting a small metal post into the jawbone. Over several months, the bone will fuse with the post in a process called osseointegration. Temporary teeth (bridges or dentures) may be an option to fill gaps in existing teeth during this healing period.

After the implant is firmly in the jawbone, our specialists will attach an abutment (connector) and custom-made prosthetic teeth to it, completing the restoration. Regular follow-up visits are necessary to monitor the healing process and ensure the implants function correctly.

Does It Hurt to Get Dental Implants?

We use appropriate anesthetics during the implant procedure to minimize and eliminate pain. You may experience swelling, minor bleeding, and discomfort throughout the healing process. We can prescribe pain relievers or recommend over-the-counter medications to help you manage these things. For many, the long-term benefits of dental implants far outweigh any temporary discomfort.
